Nature knows best – get gorgeously glowing with home-made face packs

Today I’m going to share with you a few home-made face mask recipes I have discovered that utilize the wonders of nature, some of which have been relied on for centuries by women all over the globe.  Some of the recipes use ingredients that you may well already have in your kitchen cupboard, for others you may need to purchase some extra ingredients, but all are extremely effective, inexpensive, and easy to make, as well as being free of the chemical preservatives and other nasties that plague most modern store bought cosmetics.

There’s no denying that advances in technology can be beneficial in so many areas; helping us to live longer and providing us with the fabulous gadgets that help us all to do our jobs more efficiently.  But sometimes it really is better to rely on Mother Nature, and skincare is one of those areas where I and many others believe that fresh and natural trumps synthetic and chemically preserved every time.

After all, most of the active ingredients that are proven to work in modern cosmetics actually derive from natural ingredients, so it makes sense to cut out all the other tosh like parabens and preservatives that your skin could well do without.     And if you think natural means less effective you’d be way off base, active ingredients such as turmeric and honey are scientifically proven to be far more beneficial when used directly and applied to skin, than their synthetic store bought counterparts.

Below I have tried to include a brief selection of recipes, but please do be aware the mixes below are just a start, I urge you to do your own research too. It really is worth your while to do so, since making my own natural homemade skincare my skin has taken on a new healthy glow and even tone that I never had before from using store bought products.

Indian Beauty Secret Mask (to help with uneven pigmentation, exfoliate, and impart a gorgeous glow)

This mask uses besan (gram flour) which Indian women have been using for centuries to gain a softer, fresher looking complexion, and which you can find sold cheaply in larger supermarkets or in ethnic grocery stores.  The addition of turmeric makes this truly a wonder mask as this potent ingredient is a powerful detoxifier, evening out pigment and imparting you with a healthy, radiant glow.  The lactic acid in the milk works to dissolve dead skin cells and also helps to fade any discolorations.

You will need:

2 teaspoons Besan Flour

¼ teaspoon Turmeric

3 teaspoons Milk

Blend the ingredients together well in a bowl until the mix takes on a batter like consistency and then apply, taking care to avoid getting any into your hair.  Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water, rubbing in small circles to exfoliate skin gently.  Splash with cold water afterward to tone and close the pores, then pat dry and enjoy your newly glowing skin!

Rosey Glow Face Pack (to restore balance, calm, and destress)

This beautifully scented rose infused mask works well to balance out and moisturize all types of skin.  Rose is also renowned for its calming and soothing properties so it’s a great face pack to use whenever you need to take time out to relax, and would also make an excellent treatment to calm down reddened or irritated skin.

You will need:

6 fresh rose petals

2 tablespoons of Rosewater

1 tbsp natural yoghurt (full fat kind)

1 tbsp runny honey

Soak the rose petals in water to moisten then drain and crush them up in a bowl, adding the rosewater, yoghurt, and honey, and mixing well.  Apply to face, leaving for 10-20 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

Honey Bee Fresh (to freshen your complexion, lighten dark spots, cleanse, and purify)

Honey is fabulously antibacterial and is great for purifying pores, moisturizing, and healing. Milk powder is a great exfoliator, dissolving stubborn dead skin cells, and the yoghurt and lemon juice lighten up any unsightly dark spots, evening out your complexion and making you look brighter and healthier.

You will need:

2 tbsps milk powder

2 tbsps lemon juice

2 tbsps natural yoghurt (full fat kind)

4 tbsps honey

Blend well and apply an even coating to your face and neck, leaving on for 15-20 minutes. Wash the mask off in warm water, splashing with cold after to close pores.

Model’s Secret Wake Up Mask

Model Shalom Harlow swears by this lifting and brightening moisturizing mask, and the best part is it’s so simple and cheap to make since it only uses two ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen cupboard!

You will need:

2 egg whites (separated from the yolk)

2 tbsps plain natural yoghurt (Greek yoghurt is good for this mask)

Mix the egg whites with the yoghurt in a bowl and apply to your face. Leave on for 5-10 minutes then rinse off using warm water.  You should notice your skin looks tighter and brighter almost immediately.
